The Dubuque, Iowa chapter of the American Advertising Federation honored Charles Franks, a Northeast Iowa Community College student, with a Gold ADDY award during a competition held in Dubuque last month.

Franks, who is enrolled in the college’s graphic design program, will go on to battle other ADDY winners April 13-14 in Kansas City, Mo., during a semi-finals competition. The federation’s finals are scheduled for June in New Orleans.

Franks won the gold in the Out of Home & Ambient Media student division for a placard titled “Anatomy of Type: Type in Hand,” the college said.

“My design was a big hand made up of different-sized letters,” Franks said. “It looked kind of like a palmistry image you would find in old fortune-teller books and posters, which was part of my inspiration.”

The design was also inspired by medical textbooks, he said.

Franks plans to use his graphic design skills in the workplace after he graduates.
