Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) will host an informational session for prospective medical assistant students May 10 at the Calmar campus.
The Medical Assistant Program Career Event will be from 4:30-6 p.m. in the Wilder Business Center, 1625 Highway 150 South, Calmar.
Prospective students will learn about the new medical assistant program, as well as employment opportunities. Attendees will also tour the campus and its facilities. The one-year diploma program will begin this fall.
The program will train the students in the various duties required in a medical office setting. Administrative duties include patient scheduling and registration, billing services and purchasing supplies. The clinical duties include collecting laboratory specimens, performing laboratory tests and sterilizing equipment. Direct patient contact includes performing blood draws and electrocardiograms and setting up x-rays.
NICC admissions staff will be available to discuss the program with students and explain how to enroll.
The demand for Medical Assistants in the Calmar area is expected to grow by 10.43 percent through 2025, according to an NICC press release.
Students are encouraged to register at https://www.nicc.edu/macareerevent/.
