The City of Cedar Rapids was awarded a regional Phoenix Award for redevelopment of the New Bohemia District, a mixed-use community.

The award evaluates projects based on the magnitude of the project, innovation, cooperation, environmental impact and socioeconomic impact. The particular areas Cedar Rapids developed were The NewBo Market, the Geonetric Building and The Depot.

The NewBo City Market promotes regional agriculture and healthy foods and is an event center. The Market Yard serves as the neighborhood park. The Geonetric building houses Geonetric, the Iowa Startup Accelerator, the Vault co-working lab, and the Iowa BIG program, which allows students to interact with professionals and be engaged in their communities. The Iowa Startup Accelerator helps entrepreneurs grow their start-ups.

The Depot, a mixed-use development, contains four buildings with ground floor retail, upper-story offices, and 46 apartments. It also increases the available parking space.

The redevelopment partners include the City of Cedar Rapids, the Housing & Urban Development Department, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and the Iowa Department of Economic Development.
