To improve fire and EMS services along and across the Altoona and Des Moines border, the agencies will provide services through common operations via a new fire station in northeast Des Moines.

Leadership staff from the Des Moines and Altoona Fire Departments have been meeting weekly since October to improve emergency response service in northeast Des Moines and western Altoona. This partnership will reduce response times and increase resource sharing to better serve each city’s residents.

Staff still need to develop solutions for inter-operable radio communications, to establish procedures on joint fire ground operations, and to conduct interdepartmental training events to increase firefighter confidence and competence before tackling a fire or medical emergency.

The collaboration affords an opportunity to provide those services through shared or reduced cost and provides service level improvements.
