City of Urbandale issued the following announcement on Jan. 23.
The City of Urbandale’s Community Development Department issued a total of 893 building permits in 2017, with a total valuation of almost $111 million. This is the fourth year in a row that the number of permits issued has increased and valuation grew over 60 percent from the previous year.
Of the total building permits issued by the City in 2017, residential investment included 165 single-family housing units, four townhome units, one 48-unit multi-family development and 12 new commercial buildings. The remaining permits include commercial and residential projects such as additions, remodels and decks.
Commercial and industrial new construction permit valuation surged nine-fold over the previous year, bolstered by new construction and additions like The Range Grill & Golf, Handle University, Highline Storage and a warehouse addition at Van Meter Inc. “We expect that 2018 will be another good year for valuation considering the continued platting of residential areas out west, and anticipated office projects like R & R Realty’s Paradigm Building, John Deere Intelligent Solutions Group’s office building. And we certainly hope the opening of the 100th Street interchange later this year will also be a real incentive for additional office and retail development,” said Community Development Director Steve Franklin.
Urbandale’s residential growth reflects high-value investment at reliably consistent rates. The City Council continues to consider projects that respond to market demands for multi-family and townhouse units and more moderately-priced housing. The City of Urbandale continues exploring the possibility of annexing additional territory.
